What to see in Málaga's historic centre in a weekend

Málaga's old town is best explored on foot over two or three days. Start with the Alcazaba, the Moorish fortress overlooking the port, and continue down to the Roman Theatre at its foot. A few minutes away is Málaga Cathedral, known as "la Manquita" for its unfinished tower, and the lively Calle Larios, the city's pedestrian shopping street.

Art lovers shouldn't miss the Picasso Museum and Picasso's birthplace on Plaza de la Merced, as well as the Centre Pompidou Málaga at the port. For sunset, head up to the Gibralfaro viewpoint or stroll along Muelle Uno, next to the port, where you'll find terraces with sea views.

Almost all of these spots are less than 15 minutes' walk from our apartments in Almansa, Carretería and Cepero.

Getting here

How to get from Málaga airport to the city centre

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is about 8 km from the historic centre, and there are several convenient, affordable ways to get there without a car:

• Cercanías train (line C1), stopping at María Zambrano station
• Aerobús, a direct bus to the city centre
• Taxi or ride-hailing, around 15-20 minutes depending on traffic

If you're staying at our Salitre 51 apartment, María Zambrano station is just a 5-minute walk away, making the train the fastest and most convenient way to get there from the airport.

Beaches

The best beaches near Málaga city centre

You don't need to leave the city to enjoy the beach. Malagueta Beach, next to the port, is the closest to the old town and has all the amenities. A little further east are Pedregalejo and El Palo, fishing neighbourhoods with beach bars where you can try grilled sardine skewers (espeto).

To the west, near our Cepero 2 apartment, you'll find the beaches of Huelin, San Andrés and La Misericordia, quieter and less crowded than those in the centre, ideal if you're after a more local atmosphere.
